Feasibility Study for a Fish Farming Project

Circular fish farm cages at sea

Fish farming depends on selecting the right species, maintaining water quality, efficient feeding and effective biological management. Results are closely tied to the production cycle and market conditions.

Key components of the study

  • Species: fit with local conditions, cycle length, growth rates, demand and selling price.
  • Water and location: water source, quality and renewal rates, the site and required infrastructure.
  • Farming system: earthen ponds, concrete tanks, cages or recirculating systems (RAS), by project type and cost.
  • Feed and operations: nutritional needs and feed conversion ratios, as feed is a major operating cost.
  • Marketing and sales: wholesale markets, restaurants and retailers identified in advance, with production matched to demand.
  • Financial analysis: setup and operating costs, expected output, revenues, cash flows and payback period.

Key risks

Disease, high mortality, poor water quality and swings in feed and fish prices. The study includes a biosecurity plan and sensitivity analysis on mortality, selling prices and feed costs.
